Leave your bandage on for no less than 8 hours, and no more than 24 hours. Overnight is perfect! Make sure your hands have been washed thoroughly before you remove the bandage.
Take your bandage off in the shower under running water, peeling the bandage off slowly. Wash the tattoo with clean fingers using a mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Take care to remove all traces of blood and plasma as this will cause scabbing. Do not scrub the tattoo with a washcloth/loofah during the two week healing period; clean hands do the trick. Pat dry with a clean paper towel - do not use a regular bath towel until the tattoo has finished healing. Do not re-bandage the tattoo.
Make sure the tattoo is completely dry. Apply a THIN layer of unscented lotion. My personal favourite to use for tattoo aftercare is Lush’s Dream Cream.
Wash and moisturize your tattoo twice a day until peeling has stopped, usually in 2-4 weeks. Continue to moisturize your tattoo daily to keep it looking good.
During the healing process, DO NOT scratch, rub, or pick at your tattoo. Your skin will peel and flake like a sunburn and it will get very itchy. Scratching will damage your healing tattoo.
Absolutely NO swimming/bathing/soaking for 4 weeks.
Absolutely NO tanning and avoid sun exposure as much as possible for 3-4 weeks. After 4 weeks, protect your tattoo with SPF 30 or higher sunblock.
Avoid clothing that rubs or chafes (if your tattoo is normally under clothing, 100% cotton or other natural fibers are recommended during the healing stage).
Avoid exercising for at least 24 hours immediately following the procedure.
It is normal to experience some pain, burning, stinging, redness, swelling, seeping fluid, and tightness of skin within the first 7-10 days of getting your tattoo.
Seek medical attention if there are signs of infection, which may include:
Discharge that is green or yellow
Swelling and redness after 7-10 days
Pain and redness or red streaks radiating out from the tattoo
Splitting, oozing, or cracking and bleeding of a tattoo after 7 days
Rash, blisters, or extreme scabbing
